We warmly invite you to the opening of Contagious Speech, a solo exhibition by Nicoline van Harskamp. Contagious Speech presents how video conferencing and synthetic speech systems are affecting our way of speaking in real life, and how breathing patterns are central to this process.
The video Contagious Speech shows an array of experts, such as a computational linguist, a medic and a human beatboxer, sometimes directly conversing with the synthesised voice of the artist. Their ‘breathless’ contributions come to life in the exhibition through the voice of a live performer.

Nicoline van Harskamp (b.1975) is an artist whose work considers acts of language and solidarity.
Her live works were staged, among other places, at the MuHKA Antwerp, Tate Modern in London, KunstWerke in Berlin, New Museum in New York, Arnolfini in Bristol, Ruhr Ding in Oberhausen, Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Project Art Centre in Dublin, Serralves Foundation in Porto, and the Kaaitheater in Brussels. She has exhibited her video and installation works internationally, and creates online projects such as the Massive Open Online Course Englishes Mooc. Contagious Speech has previously been shown at the Tulca Festival in Galway, Galerie UQO in Quebec and the Clemente Center in New York City, and also has some online components.

Manifold Books is a platform that explores connections between art and books. With each exhibition a few titles are added to its book collection (all including artists’ interventions). As of May 11, 2021, Manifold Books has become a foundation. Its board members are: Arnisa Zeqo (chair), Stéphanie Noach (secretary) and Paul Domela (treasurer).
