‘I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful—
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.’

Sylvia Plath. Extract from Mirror (Crossing The Water, 1971)

The Elsa Meunier Gallery is pleased to present Jörg Kratz's work in the exhibition “Là où l’eau rêve”.
This is the artist's second solo exhibition at the gallery.

These are diffuse landscapes, whose shadows blend with the foliage under the brushstrokes. Who knows if the scene in a work by Jörg Kratz is not just a dream or a memory, standing over the lake, abandoning its reflection on the slick surface. This ‘four-cornered’ water mirror swallows up everything that comes before it, setting the pace for the painter's work as well as in Sylvia Plath’s poem. It could just as
easily be linked to the format of a canvas.

Atmospheric, the series “Là où l’eau rêve” is an opportunity for the artist to present this collection as a single panorama. The observer finds themselves immersed in a world of trees, untouched by human presence and buzzing with life. I see a winding labyrinth, woven like a bouquet of water lilies against the cloudy sky. A vast, sombre fresco of a state that is both contemplative and within oneself. Time dissolves
here, intangible and fleeting, yet dense. Like the variations of being.

There is something familiar about losing oneself in Jörg Kratz's vibrant horizons. An elusive feeling, that of having already been there, yesterday or years ago. This is surely because his landscapes show what sometimes remains unchanged for millennia. What escapes us, we ephemeral individuals. What the painter can give us the illusion of containing in matter. What light passes through until the end of time.
